Dietary Recommendations for Hypothyroidism
There are certain foods that can hinder thyroid function and there are some foods that improve thyroid function. This is why it is important for someone suffering from hypothyroidism to choose what to eat and how much to eat carefully. Here are some dietary tips for hypothyroid patients:
- Rather than 3 large meals a day, hypothyroid patients should have 5 to 6 small meals a day to stay energetic.
- One serving of lean protein, such as chicken, turkey, fish or beans, per meal is advised.
- 5 to 6 servings of vegetables per day is advised.
- As constipation is common amongst hypothyroid patients, high-fibre foods, such as brown rice and oats porridge, should be a part of the diet. Also, fermented vegetables are advised, as they aid with digestion.
- The daily allowance of iodine through foods such as table salt, kelp, seaweed and seafood, is 150 mcg per day. Remember, too less iodine can cause hypothyroidism and too much iodine can inhibit the production of the thyroid hormone.
- Selenium, that is found in Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, fish, shellfish, eggs, grain and red meat, is essential for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland. The daily allowance of selenium is 50 to 55 mcg per day.
- It is advisable that the thyroid medication should be taken an hour before meals and drinks. The best time to take the thyroid medication is early in the morning, just after waking up, with a glass of water.
- Goitrogenic foods, such as spinach, kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, radish, Brussels sprouts, strawberries, peaches and soy, block the intake of iodine into the thyroid, and therefore should be strictly avoided.
- Dairy molecules can cause an attack on the thyroid that could further damage the tissue. Therefore, dairy products, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, should be avoided.
- High-fat foods and high-sugar foods should be avoided too.
